Background
The Commercial Kitchens Initiative seeks to provide clear, consistent and credible definitions for a set of high performance commercial kitchen equipment that members can deliver as a “package” (or individually) to targeted food service market sectors. Equipment testing is key to development of specifications for high performance equipment, and a clear understanding of how testing is conducted, test methods are developed, test method limitations, and the future direction of test procedures can help programs administrators plan and design robust commercial kitchens programs.
Over the past year, the Gas Committee has researched the market for, and discussed the technical potential of, commercial gas water heaters. We now have a strong sense of the market and how it differs from the way in which we've worked with water heating on the residential side. It is our goal to create a CEE initiative for commercial storage and tankless water heating technologies and develop specifications that will achieve savings and be cost effective for CEE members. Deciding where to set the storage water heater specifications and what type of guidance the initiative will provide on tankless is the next step in the initiative development process.
Workshop in a Nutshell
During the morning sessions, the group will gain an understanding of the many dimensions of commercial kitchen equipment testing and explore if and how equipment testing can further program efforts in additional product categories (e.g., kitchen ventilation systems).
During the afternoon sessions, the group will tour PG&E’s water heating test center and explore program design considerations for commercial water heating programs.
Who Should Attend?
Energy efficiency programs with established commercial kitchens and water heating programs, as well as those in the planning or beginning stages of their programs, will benefit from this workshop.
