Surveys, Replacements, and Repairs – The Ins and Outs of Steam Trap Programs

May 10, 2010 2:00-3:30pm Eastern

Facilitator: Jennifer Anziano, CEE
Experts: Jessica Rose, Energy Trust of Oregon; Karl Hilker, Wisconsin Focus on Energy; Kerry Klemm, Xcel Energy

What's It About?

According to research by DOE, a well maintained steam system is expected to have approximately a 10 percent failure in steam traps annually. This results in significant energy, in the form of steam, being lost from the system. It is difficult to estimate the exact savings opportunity from steam trap replacement, as savings depend on steam trap size and system pressure, but one estimate from DOE indicates that high pressure systems can loose up to 1,300 lbs/hr of steam resulting in significant annual energy losses.

Steam trap programs are often considered an easy, cost-effective approach to capturing savings in natural gas steam boiler systems. Additionally, steam trap programs are thought to be a “foot in the door” to the steam system or plant, allowing programs to identify additional savings opportunities. This session will highlight three different steam trap programs to provide a better understanding of the various approaches, goals, and challenges of CEE member programs.

What is Ask the Experts?

This webinar is part of the Ask the Experts series of free workshops presented in webinar format to help new or prospective efficiency program administrators tackle specific energy efficiency program issues. The format is both informative and interactive, so be sure to bring your questions.

Who Should Attend?

Ask the Experts is open to new administrators of energy efficiency programs, state regulators, and employees of CEE members. Contractors and consultants are currently excluded. Others may participate by personal invitation of CEE.

This session is ideal for program managers that are new to the commercial and industrial steam system market or are looking to add an additional offering to their existing program. Additionally, program managers with experience running steam trap programs are welcome as an opportunity to learn and discuss best practices, program challenges, and lessons learned.
