Manufacturers

There are two major lines of commercial reach-in, solid-door refrigerators and freezers. The standard line of products tend to be less expensive and are primarily sold to commercial food establishments. These represent 70 percent of the total market.

The primary manufacturers for standard line equipment are: True (20 percent market share), Beverage Air (12 percent), Delfield (12 percent), Hobart (6 percent), McCall (6 percent) and Glenco-Star (4 percent). Other manufacturers make up the remaining 40 percent.

The second major line is termed "specification." The specification line products are typically more attractive and durable (i.e. stronger handles). The primary manufacturers for the specification line are: Traulsen (30 percent market share), Hobart (20 percent), Victory (15 percent), Delfield (9 percent), Beverage Air (9 percent) and McCall (8 percent).

Distributors
Typically, manufacturers work through regional sales offices or manufacturer's representatives to sell equipment to equipment dealers and beverage and food distributors. It is estimated that approximately 80 percent of end-users make their purchases through distributors. The other 20 percent of purchases are made through large purchasing groups, such as Tricon, that purchase directly from manufacturers. In addition, it is estimated that used equipment accounts for roughly 50 percent of the units purchased by restaurants.
