Product information

CEE's Commercial Refrigerator and Freezer Initiative currently includes two levels of efficiency:

  • Tier 1 is equivalent to the ENERGY STAR specification, which was established in September 2001. It approximates the top 25 percent of products on the market, based on energy performance

  • Tier 2 is 40 percent more efficient than ENERGY STAR for refrigerators, and 30 percent more efficient than ENERGY STAR for freezers.

Products qualifying for Tier 1 (and the corresponding energy performance) can be found on the ENERGY STAR Web site.

A qualifying list of Tier 2 products for refrigerators and freezers is currently available on-line.

The California Energy Commission also provides a database of energy-efficient commercial refrigerators. The CEC recently amended its appliance efficiency regulations to include minimum-efficiency standards for commercial reach-in refrigerators. The CEC standard is set to include the top 75 percent of available models (based on energy performance) as of March 2003. In August 2004, the standard will increase to include the top 50 percent of available models, based on energy performance.

Technical Potential
In 2001, Delfield and AD Little, sponsored by DOE, developed the Delfield Vantage 6000. This model is reported to be 68 percent more efficient than the average model.

Detailed information about this model can be found in Section 4 of the 2002 DOE report: Application of Best Industry Practices to the Design of Commercial Refrigerators.

Known technologies and/or approaches to enhance performance currently include:

  • more efficient compressors
  • non-electric anti-sweat feature
  • better cabinet design
  • elimination of heat bridges
  • more insulation
  • higher-efficiency evaporator fans

The average payback period for these various technologies is slightly less than two years.
