Product information

CEE's Commercial Ice-Makers specification currently includes three levels of efficiency:

  • Tier 1 is an adapted version of the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) specification, approximating the top 25 percent of products on the market, based on energy performance

  • Tier 2 is 7-20 percent more efficient than the Tier 1

  • Tier 3 is 15 percent more efficient than the Tier 1

A list of qualifying models derived from the ARI certification directory (Standard 810/2000) of ice-making equipment is now available.

Technical Potential
A 1996 DOE study estimates that energy savings of 18 percent can be realized through the use of high-efficiency compressors and fan motors, thicker insulation, and other measures. The incremental costs of these improvements have an estimated payback period of a little over two years.

In an analysis of the range of products currently on the market, ACEEE research indicates that the highest performing models on the market are 18-46 percent more efficient than the worst performing models, with a payback period of 1.1 years or less. Manufacturers have also indicated that they have the technical capability to exceed current efficiency levels.
