COMMERCIAL BOILER STUDY IS AVAILABLE

CEE commissioned a study of the energy savings opportunity presented by condensing boilers. The study, A Market Assessment for Condensing Boilers in Commercial Heating Applications, was completed in fall 2001 and is now available as a downloadable PDF document.

The report developed case studies and includes a "feature set" that describes appropriate product features for condensing boilers and suggests installation considerations for true condensing operation of the boiler.

In addition to technical aspects of condensing boilers, the report also provides market size estimates and detailed descriptions of three market segments (schools, office buildings and low-rise apartments). Barriers to the manufacture and sales of condensing boilers – as well as suggestions for market transformation – are also discussed.

The results of the study were evaluated in order to determine whether to create a formal initiative for commercial boilers. The results of the study suggest that the technology is best suited for use in New England and Canadian markets for school and federal buildings.

CEE's Gas Committee decided not to pursue the development of a formal initiative. The committee felt that if there were a significant change in market conditions or the technology, or if activities were performed on a regional level CEE could reconsider the need for a national effort.
