CEE Motor Systems Tool Kit

The Motor Systems Initiative is developing a tool kit to help motor program representatives and contractors promote a variety of motor-related efficiency improvements. In its final form, the tool kit will include both technical tools (software, checklists, guidelines, etc.) and promotional tools targeting the interests of a variety of audiences, such as maintenance, operation, and management personnel. In addition, the tool kit will be tested in the food processing, water/waste-water, and forest products industries through member-sponsored pilots.

Below is the first version of the tool kit, which will be updated regularly as the initiative develops. Tools are currently available on the following topics:

Motors and Motor Management

  • MotorMaster+4.0 – An energy-efficient motor selection and management tool developed by the Department of Energy (DOE), MotorMaster+ 3.0 software includes a catalog of more than 20,000 AC motors.
  • Asynchronous drives and VSD programs
Many utilities offer incentives for installation of ASDs in fan and pump systems. Most offer "custom" incentives for ASD and other energy-saving measures. A few utilities offer pre-calculated incentives per unit horsepower controlled by the ASD, provided certain criteria are met.
  • National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)
  • Copper Development Association (CDA)

Motor Repair
Washington State University developed the following DOE Materials:

California Motors Initiative
Electrical Apparatus Service Association
  • Tech. Note 16 – Guidelines for Maintaining Motor Efficiency During Rebuilding
  • A Guide to AC Motor Repair and Replacement
  • AR100-1998 Recommended Practice for the Repair of Rotating Electrical Apparatus

Compressed Air
Compressed Air Challenge Resources

  • CAC Fundamentals of Compressed Air Training Course
  • CAC Advanced Compressed Air Management Training Course
  • Improving Compressed Air System Performance: A Sourcebook for Industry – in-depth resource designed to provide compressed air system users with a reference that outlines opportunities for system performance improvements

Pumps
Pump System Assessment Tool (PSAT)
The Pump System Assessment Tool helps assess the efficiency of pumping system operations. PSAT uses achievable pump performance data from Hydraulic Institute standards and motor performance data to calculate potential energy and associated cost savings.

Improving Pumping System Performance: A Sourcebook for Industry
Motor Challenge is publishing a new reference book on energy efficiency in pumping systems for industry. Improving Pumping System Performance: A Sourcebook for Industry is the second in a series of sourcebooks developed by Motor Challenge. A sourcebook on compressed air systems optimization is also available, and sourcebooks on fan systems optimization, and motors and drives are under development.

The sourcebook provides an overview of industrial pumping systems, a roadmap for identifying system improvement opportunities, 12 fact sheets detailing these opportunities, a directory of programs, resources, tools and other relevant information.

The Hydraulic Institute members of the Life Cycle Cost Committee provided input to Motor Challenge on the Sourcebook. Call the OIT Clearinghouse at 800-862-2086 for information on availability and cost of this publication.

Fans
QuikFan – Analysis of the cost effectiveness of upgrading variable air volume (VAV) systems. It provides screening-level analysis without complex building data. The primary focus of the software is the application of variable speed drives (VSD) to fan motors. QuikFan also has options for high efficiency motor installation and static pressure resets.

Fan Laws – Reference for standard fan engineering equations.
