EERE (DOE)
(formerly DOE-OIT)
Contact: CHRIS COCKRILL
FSAT and fan training
The DOE Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) introduces two new resources that can help industrial plants identify and take advantage of the many opportunities to save energy and costs, and improve the performance of their fan systems: the Fan System Assessment Tool and Fan System Assessment training workshop.
Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT)
The Pumping System Assessment Tool helps industrial users assess the efficiency of pumping system operations. PSAT uses achievable pump performance data from Hydraulic Institute standards and motor performance data from the MotorMaster+ database to calculate potential energy and associated cost savings.
Improving Pumping System Performance: A Sourcebook for Industry
This is the second in a series of sourcebooks developed by Motor Challenge. A sourcebook on compressed air systems optimization is also available, and sourcebooks on fan systems optimization and motor & drives are under development. The sourcebook provides an overview of industrial pumping systems, a roadmap for identifying system improvement opportunities, 12 fact sheets detailing these opportunities, a directory of programs, resources and tools, and other relevant information. Call the EERE Information Center (formerly the OIT Clearinghouse) at 1-877-337-3463 or visit www.eere.energy.gov/informationcenter for information on availability and cost of this publication.
Multiple Customer Case Studies: Pump System Efficiency Projects
Fan System Efficiency Projects
CEE Motor Systems Initiative
Contact: TED JONES
CEE's Motor Systems Initiative is developing a tool kit to help motor program representatives and contractors promote a variety of motor-related efficiency improvements. In its final form, the tool kit will include both technical tools (software, checklists, guidelines, etc.) and promotional tools targeting the interests of a variety of audiences, such as maintenance, operation, and management personnel. In addition, the tool kit will be tested in the food processing, water/wastewater and forest products industries through member-sponsored pilots.
Motor Decisions Matter Campaign
Contact: TED JONES, CEE
Motor Decisions MatterSM (MDM) is a national campaign encouraging the use of sound motor management and planning as a tool to cut motor energy costs and increase productivity. Major efficiency programs, motor manufacturers and NEMA, the repair industry (represented by EASA), EPA and DOE have joined together to support this campaign. As a collaborative effort, MDM is intended to complement existing regional programs with a consistent national message encouraging motor decision planning. MDM tools and resources include a national network of motor experts, a motor planning kit, and a motor slide calculator. For more information, see the MDM Web site.
ACEEE
White Paper: Fan and Pump Systems, Markets and Programs
Contact: NEAL ELLIOTT, ACEEE
This report, written by Neal Elliott and Steve Nadel, examines the market for pumps and fans, and highlights efficiency programming around the country.
California Energy Commission
Contact: MICHAEL MARTIN
Energy represents the largest controllable cost of providing water or wastewater services to the public. California water and wastewater agencies spend more than $500 million each year on energy costs. The California Energy Commission's Energy-Water Connection is dedicated to providing resources to help water professionals control these costs.
Alliance to Save Energy
Contact: KEVIN JAMES
ASE's new report, Watergy: Taking Advantage of Untapped Energy and Water Efficiency Opportunities in Municipal Water Systems details energy-efficiency measures that are applicable worldwide, from U.S. cities to developing nations and describes projects in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, and North and South America. For more information, see the executive summary and full report on ASE's Web site.
Hydraulic Institute
Contact: BOB ASDAL
As the association of pump manufacturers, the Hydraulic Institute (HI) serves member companies and pump-users by providing product standards and a forum for the exchange of industry information.
Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International
AMCA International, based in Illinois, is a not-for-profit association dedicated to the certification of manufacturers' performance ratings on fans, louvers, dampers, air curtains, airflow measurement stations, acoustic attenuators and other air system components for the industrial, commercial, and residential markets. In addition, AMCA International has established voluntary certified ratings programs to address concerns about product performance on the part of buyers, specifiers, and users of ventilation and related devices. AMCA International publishes and distributes standards, references, and application manuals for those with an interest in air systems.
Savings By Design
Contact: MANNY D'ALBORA, PGE
This program is funded by California utility customers and administered by Pacific Gas & Electric, San Diego Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas.
Energy Design Resources
The Web site provides tools for architects, engineers, lighting designers, and developers about techniques and technologies that contribute to energy efficient new construction of commercial and industrial buildings in California.
ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR® offers a software program for HVAC fans in the commercial sector, called Quik Fan 4.0. The program helps customers analyze the cost effectiveness of upgrading variable air volume (VAV) systems in commercial buildings by serving as a screening and analysis tool. The primary purpose of the software is to identify appropriate applications of variable speed drives (VSD) to fan motors; it has options for high-efficiency motor installation and static pressure resets.
