The American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AWWRF) developed, tested and fielded a survey to water and wastewater facility supervisors, collecting important data about facility usage and energy consumption. The survey instrument developed for this project has been made available to CEE members. Click here for information about downloading and using these surveys.

Launched in December 2004, the National Municipal Water and Wastewater Facility Initiative will focus on promoting greater energy efficiency in publicly-held facilities, including those operated by municipalities, counties, water districts or authorities, and townships.

On the national level, the initiative will promote a strong message about the benefits of energy efficiency in the water/wastewater sector and provide a forum for stakeholders. At the local level, the initiative will provide tools and resources that CEE members can use to implement energy-efficiency programs for individual facilities.

CEE's National Municipal Water and Wastewater Facility Initiative is designed to increase demand for improved facility performance and encourage suppliers of products and services to adopt energy efficiency as a standard industry practice. Toward that end, CEE will pursue the following activities:

  • Raising awareness among senior-level decision-makers about the benefits of energy efficiency in their facilities
  • Focusing CEE members on key motor and process opportunities
  • Supporting the development of an industry-wide metric to measure the energy performance of water and wastewater facilities
  • Developing cooperative relationships with industry stakeholders and their trade associations

Background information
Water and wastewater facilities are energy intensive, accounting for up to 35 percent of municipal energy usage. Studies have estimated the savings potential at 15-30 percent, which translates into as much as 31 billion kWh. Since facilities operate 24 hours a day, the potential to reduce peak demand is also a significant factor.

There are a host of non-energy benefits as well, including a reduction in the accumulation of solid waste, a decrease in the use of chemicals, longer equipment life and better control.

The water/wastewater industry is constantly faced with increasing costs that stem from aging infrastructure, new health regulations and population growth. The initiative is designed to convince decision-makers in this sector that energy efficiency is a viable solution to these challenges.
