Each year the Water Environment Federation hosts WEFTEC—the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference. More than 19,900 people representing over 1,000 companies attended WEFTEC this year in San Diego (October 13-17), making it the largest event in the conference’s 80-year history.
During the last few years more and more WEFTEC sessions have focused on energy issues. More than 20 papers on energy efficiency, energy management, and energy recovery were presented this year—many of them authored by CEE members. For instance, Greg Lampman of NYSERDA, Joe Cantwell of Wisconsin Focus on Energy, Stephen Fok of PG&E, and Ted Jones of CEE coauthored a paper, A National Program Initiative to Support Energy Savings in the Municipal Wastewater Sector. The paper summarized the program approaches and experiences of three CEE members and introduced CEE’s Municipal Water and Wastewater Initiative. Contact CEE’s Ted Jones for a copy of the paper.
CEE members also participated in a WEFTEC workshop focusing on sustainable energy management approaches in wastewater treatment. The workshop highlighted state energy programs with presentations from NYSERDA, Wisconsin Focus on Energy, and the California Energy Commission. During the session on ENERGY STAR’s Water and Wastewater Industries Focus, Caterina Hatcher, municipal market manager, introduced ENERGY STAR’s newest addition to Portfolio Manager, an energy performance rating system for wastewater treatment plants. See ENERGY STAR's Web site for details.
