Implementing a Water Heating Field Test Protocol

RELATED STORY
CEE Unites Water Heating Manufacturers and ENERGY STAR

CEE’s Tankless Water Heater Subcommittee has designed a water heating field test protocol for members to use. The protocol recommends procedures for monitoring residential gas storage and tankless units in the home, first monitoring the homeowner’s existing storage tank for gas and water use, then installing a tankless unit and monitoring it under the same conditions. The research goal is to determine the before and after differences of the in-field energy consumption and homeowner behavior when using storage and tankless water heaters. The Tankless Water Heater Subcommittee brought together experts in water heating technologies, program administrators, and experts in program evaluation to create a robust protocol that will help answer member questions about water consumption. The protocol is ready for in-field pilot testing. Please let Joanne O’Donnell know if your program is interested in using the protocol.
