CEE had a busy and productive year. Below are highlights of CEE member activities and achievements. All of the participants who make up CEE should be proud of everything we’ve done this past year, our eighteenth since we were founded.

We're looking forward to continuing to work together and advance efficiency in 2010!

Government Partners

  • 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes billions for energy efficiency, kick-starting increase in energy investment
  • Cathy Zoi, Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, seeks stronger relationship with efficiency program administrators at Industry Partner meeting to revolutionize energy efficiency in United States
  • New ENERGY STAR® agreement between DOE and EPA, announced by Zoi and Vargas, is consistent with previous CEE recommendations
  • Top tier for super efficient products nested within ENERGY STAR, idea suggested and piloted by CEE members, is under consideration by ENERGY STAR for formal adoption

Organizational Partners

  • CEE and EPRI sign memorandum of understanding identifying shared objectives and work areas of mutual interest, with goal of collaborating to leverage each other’s expertise. Immediate efforts focus on insights into advanced motor technologies with Motors and Motor Systems, benchmarking with Data Centers and Servers, and variable refrigerant flow technology with Commercial HVAC
  • CEE signs memorandum of understanding with Gas Technology Institute (GTI) to involve their research and marketing staff with Gas Committee work. First project centers on Gas PAC technology
  • AGA and IEE are major contributors and collaborators on annual data collection effort; results reflected in this year’s report

Programmatic

Residential Sector

  • Television specification under Consumer Electronics Initiative is updated to add tier 3 (30 percent above ENERGY STAR) and 4 (45 percent above ENERGY STAR)
  • Sponsors approve continuation of Lighting for Tomorrow design competition for 2009–2011
  • Joint Residential and Commercial Lighting Committees, with Board approval, identify information and test data required by programs for solid-state lighting product evaluation
  • Appliance Committee makes progress in exploration of pool pumps and is working toward 2010 CEE specification
  • Residential dishwasher specification is revised; two tiers are established above ENERGY STAR
  • CEE Quality Installation Specification (ANSI-ACCA 5 QI 2007) expands to better address gas heating and commercial equipment
  • Existing Homes Program Guide is drafted. Identifies efficiency opportunities in existing homes along with ways efficiency programs can transition from end uses to comprehensive approaches by working together with industry

Industrial Sector

  • Member interest in energy management and continuous energy improvement grows, 15 members offer programs for industrial customers—five more than last year
  • CEE Industrial Program Planning Committee monitors development of new energy management standards, including international energy management standard (ISO 50001) and four industrial system assessment standards developed by American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Committee assesses implications of industry standards on future program designs and offer comments
  • In pilot project with DOE, CEE alerts members when DOE Save Energy Now industrial assessments are scheduled in their service territories. Out of 162 industrial DOE assessments conducted in 2009, CEE facilitates member program support for 16 of them
  • Committee identifies need to develop energy management resources to support programs and program guide to define key terms and describe program designs
  • Water-Wastewater Committee engages blower manufacturers in pursuing new industry energy performance metric and test procedure. Also initiates collaboration with Water Environment Federation to develop and distribute guidance for municipalities
  • Motors and Motor Systems Committee identifies over 500 motors with efficiencies higher than upcoming new federal minimum standard. Investigates the benefits of increasing scope of CEE Premium Efficiency Motors Initiative to include seven newly regulated motor types. Enhancing adjustable speed drive programs is prioritized for 2010

Commercial Sector

  • Food Service Kitchens offers specifications and qualified product lists in seven product categories, including revised refrigeration specification
  • Commercial Lighting Committee modifies HP T8 specification to expand the scope of product coverage
  • Commercial Lighting working group develops comprehensive approaches to lighting, including traditional technologies, controls, design assistance, SSL, and day lighting
  • Data Centers and Servers starts an initial program framework for organizing program strategies
  • HVAC Committee revises unitary HVAC specification, advances a framework for advanced rooftop units, and gains AHRI commitment to identify and develop national infrastructure for improving efficiency and in-field performance of unitary rooftop units
  • New relationships with gas boiler manufacturers are leading to development of guidance specification to encourage proper product selection, installation, and operation
  • Whole Building Performance Committee convenes benchmarking workshop, resulting in draft program guide to benchmarking

Gas Sector

  • Gas Committee explores opportunities to support gas product efficiency and contribute to comprehensive building efforts across sectors
  • In Las Vegas, Nevada CEE kicks off Coalition for ENERGY STAR® Water Heaters, supplemental project that promotes ENERGY STAR water heaters to distribution chain
  • Gas Committee drafts Water Heater Installer Outreach Program Guide
  • Commercial Gas PAC rooftop unit opportunity is explored in day-long workshop at Industry Partner meeting, bringing together program administrators and manufacturers

Evaluation, Research & Behavior

  • Completes fourth year of collection of energy efficiency industry data. This year's data collection, performed in partnership with IEE and AGA, reduces data requests to CEE members while yielding most comprehensive and transparent energy efficiency data yet secured by CEE
  • Ninth year of ENERGY STAR Survey, sponsored by CEE members and compiled and analyzed at CEE, shows continued increases in ENERGY STAR brand recognition, especially in areas where members publicize label
  • Launches Behavior Committee with new staff, vastly expanded resources, and releases RFQ for member training in Social Marketing
  • Completes data collection stage of CEE Evaluation and Behavior Survey, requesting programs employing behavior change strategies and related evaluation approaches
  • Presents workshop on energy efficiency programs for new regulators at Camp NARUC
  • Obtains 2007 motors market penetration data for CEE member use from NEMA
