Forty individuals from over 15 CEE member organizations got to experience energy efficiency research and management in full display at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on January 13. As part of a half-day workshop, Berkeley Lab scientists and researchers shared insights about their current energy efficiency research and some of the facilities and spaces that provide them with valuable feedback. Among other energy research and demonstration activities, attendees learned about Berkeley Lab energy efficient building systems research, high tech data center and laboratory work, and other activities that support the U.S. Department of Energy and energy efficiency organizations.
One of the highlights included a tour of the high tech data center that supports Berkeley Lab administration and research units. Members learned about the management techniques, monitoring systems and procedures Berkeley Lab staff established to enable them to monitor, manage and improve their energy performance.
“That old adage that you can’t manage what you don’t measure applies to high tech spaces just as it does to buildings,” says Dale Sartor, who leads the Applications Team at Berkeley Lab. “We took several initial steps that allow us to manage our energy use and create the right environmental conditions for our servers and other equipment. We benchmark our energy performance and have monitoring systems in plac e that allow the team to track energy performance over time, identify “hot spots” in the data center, and make adjustments to improve air flow and equipment operations."
