2009 CEE Industry Data Released

Expenditures Captured for First Time

Boston, MA—The State of the Efficiency Program Industry: Budgets, Expenditures, and Impacts 2009, provides the proof of a growing energy efficiency industry. The total of efficiency budgets for gas and electric in both the U.S. and Canada topped $6.1 billion for 2009. These budgets do not include stimulus funds.

U.S. program administrators increased budgets for energy efficiency programs by 43 percent in 2009, while Canada stayed even in the economic downturn at $760 million. The U.S.alone reached $5.3 billion, including $4.4 billion for electric efficiency and $930 million for natural gas programs.

U.S. electric program budgets increased the most, by $1.2 billion, or 38%, while U.S. natural gas budgets in creased by $411 million, or a whopping 80%. Utility energy efficiency programs also expanded geographically, as data were collected from 46 states, compared to only 37 states in 2008.

Marc Hoffman, executive director of CEE, commented that "Measuring the size of the energy efficiency program industry allows us to view ourselves as we really are—an industry with impact in both countries. In turn, it gives CEE members a way to communicate to other stakeholders in efficiency the importance of what we do."

Dr. Monica Nevius, who oversaw data collection and analysis, comments, "Having good data is critical to analyzing the work of our industry. Each year since CEE began collecting budgets and impacts data from efficiency program administrators, the scope and detail has grown. For 2009, CEE again increased the number of respondents and, in addition to budgets and impacts, requested data on 2008 expenditures."

A report highlighting the detailed data is now available, along with organizational data for the respondents who agreed to release this information to the public. For more information about the data, contact Monica Nevius. If you are a member and would like presentation graphics, please contact Sarah Griffith.
