Lighting for Tomorrow award-winners
will be announced May 17

The next generation of attractive and innovative residential lighting fixtures will be on display when Lighting for Tomorrow award winners are announced at the American Lighting Association Annual Conference in Tucson, Ariz., on May 17.

Executive Director Marc Hoffman and Residential Program Manager Rebecca Foster of CEE will take part in the awards ceremony. Mark Ginsberg of the Department of Energy is the featured speaker.

Lighting for Tomorrow, a national lighting fixture design competition, was launched in 2002 with the goal of increasing the range and selection of attractive, high-efficiency residential lighting fixtures.

The winning fixtures, including the $10,000 grand-prize winner, will be exhibited during a 9:30 a.m. press conference at the Westin La Paloma Hotel (3800 East Sunrise Drive, 520-742-6000).

At the press conference, which immediately follows the awards ceremony, these new cutting-edge prototype designs will be lighted and on display. The winning designers and Lighting for Tomorrow sponsors will be available for interviews.

High-resolution photos of the winning designs will be available on CD and on the Lighting for Tomorrow Web site.

In addition to the grand-prize winner, three second-place winners and a special Technical Innovation Award were selected from the finalists.

More than 100 designs were submitted by dozens of manufacturers and designers in the competition's first judging cycle in 2003. Finalists were identified by a multi-stakeholder judging panel and were then invited to submit prototypes earlier this year. In total, 18 prototypes and production-quality fixtures were assessed by the judging panel in February.

Lighting for Tomorrow is sponsored by the American Lighting Association (ALA), Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and the U.S. Department of Energy (represented by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory).

"The competition has helped to open the eyes of manufacturers and designers to a growing opportunity, encouraging them to produce more decorative, efficient fixtures," said Terry McGowan, ALA's Director of Engineering and Technology. "Showroom managers and salespeople are also far more aware of the energy-efficient options than they were when we began the project. Lighting for Tomorrow has made a significant impact on this market."

In addition to the ALA Conference, the winning fixtures will be displayed at the Designers Lighting Forum of New York (June 23), the Dallas Lighting Market (June 25-29) and the ACEEE Summer Study in Pacific Grove, Calif. (Aug. 22-27).

ABOUT THE COMPETITION
Lighting for Tomorrow, open to professional lighting designers and manufacturers, was launched in December 2002. To be eligible, fixture designs had to be dedicated to an energy-efficient light source (complying with the efficacy requirements of the ENERGY STAR® Residential Light Fixture specification) and rated for use in residential buildings. There were seven product categories: chandelier, pendant, portable, sconce, surface-mounted, task and track.
