NEMA releases state-level motor shipment data

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has publicly released state-level shipment data for its NEMA PremiumŪ motors program and issued a formal press release.

The release is available on the NEMA Web site.

The data represent a finalized version of the preliminary shipment information received by CEE members and Motor Decisions Matter sponsors during the summer.

According to the data, total net shipments of NEMA Premium motors increased 30 percent from 2001 to 2002. In 2003, the total net shipments increased 14 percent from the previous year. These results suggest increased demand for premium-efficiency motors.

The NEMA press release also cited the "growing strength of the Motor Decisions Matter campaign."

"It's a great start," said CEE Executive Director Marc Hoffman. "This is a direct result of our evolving partnership with NEMA and the motor industry. We appreciate the effort by NEMA to obtain the data and it demonstrates a real willingness by motor manufacturers to work with efficiency programs."

In addressing the Board of Directors prior to CEE's June meeting, NEMA President Malcolm O'Hagan praised the work of CEE in the motors market and looked forward to a growing partnership.

Due to circumstances beyond NEMA's control, this data set does not include total motor shipments (NEMA Premium and non-NEMA Premium); thus a calculation of NEMA Premium market penetration is not available at this time. The data also include shipments to OEMs, which are estimated to be only a small portion of NEMA's Premium motors shipment.

CEE is working with NEMA in hopes of obtaining data on non-NEMA Premium shipments as well as NEMA Premium motor shipments for 2004, and of removing OEM motors from the data. In addition, CEE has asked NEMA to consider collapsing the number of data categories, which could make the data more useful for smaller states.

"We've made some important inroads here and this is great news for our members," said Hoffman. "NEMA understands our concerns about the limitations of the data and is working to provide better information in 2005."
