CEE revises specifications for residential HVAC initiative

For the first time since 1995, CEE has revised performance levels for its Residential Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps Initiative.

The new specification increases minimum performance levels for split systems, recognizes single-packaged units as a distinct product category (with a separate specification) and modifies HSPF requirements to reflect current market conditions. It also reduces the number of tiers from four to three.

These specifications were approved by the CEE Board of Directors on Dec. 11, 2003.

“Creating a national specification for this equipment was fairly challenging since equipment use and energy savings vary in different climates,” said John Taylor, CEE Residential Program Manager. “The new tiers strike a good balance between promoting the most efficient equipment available and maximizing program participation.” Several other issues were addressed, including model availability, an adjustment of the HSPF levels and a reduction in the number of tiers.
